Style | Closet Confessions

This Closet Confessions I'm asking a very important question: can you shop fast fashion responsibly? It's such a vast and significant topic, especially given our current climate of throw-away fashion. I'm a big believer in buying things that you love and treasuring them for years.

The best way I could illustrate this subject is by putting on a rail my favourite things I have ever bought from Zara. Some of these pieces stretch all the way back to 2003. For me, it isn't about where you shop necessarily, but the importance you attach to each garment that comes into your life. Is it a good friend that will stay for a long time? Consider how you can make something feel really loved immediately as it comes into your wardrobe.

We're also discussing the emotional conditions under which we shop. I know, opening up a can of worm ladies... Ultimately, shopping sustainably is about finding those hardy perennials that you feel ageless in. For example, this Zara jumper and these Zara jeans I'll wear when I don't know what else to wear; they're reliable and without a sell-by date.

Remember that it isn't strictly about the price, it's about the preciousness you associate with an item. Some items I treat with more reverence because of how they make me feel.

So ladies, here are my top tips for purchasing fast fashion in a more sustainable way:

1) Consider cost per wear. If it has a very low cost per wear, is it worth it? Try to think of other ways you can wear the item.
2) Buy things that are classic. A navy blazer and the perfect white shirt will never go out of fashion.
3) Look after your things. Use the right hangers and be gentle with delicate fabrics.
4) Avoid buttons. Buttons tie a piece to a particular time or trend.
5) Always think, what makes you happy? Does the item "spark joy"?
