I know some women are capable of having what you might call a “curated wardrobe” of just the basics that they reach for again and again. Those items will always be classic and completely timeless. Minimalist is not a word I would use to describe my wardrobe, but I do heavily rely on what I call my essentials. And many of you ask me which items it’s worth investing in, so this Closet Confessions is all about the essentials that you love and wear endlessly.
If I had to start from scratch (heaven forbid), these are the basics I would need to build my wardrobe. A part of dressing for me is that I can walk into a room and give other people a sense of joy. The primary objective is to dress for yourself to enhance or elevate your mood but the secondary objective is to dress for other people and the reflection of how they see you will feed back into your heart.
Some of the brands I mention below don’t stock “plus-sizes” so if that’s you, do look at Violeta.
Now for the list...
A white coat - something that I wear come summer or winter. It has a freshness and lightness to it and gives you that vavavoom when you come into a room without actually being a colour. However, it isn’t something to wear on a dirty commute but it is something that makes me feel I am fully dressed.
A coat in your best colour - this is intuitive really, the colour you are most drawn to and the one that truly perks you up.
A colourful coat - my new pink version is from River Island.
A white shirt - well, obviously…
A dark-coloured coat - to go with everything.
A navy blazer - they rarely look unfashioned, though I tend to go for one and two button iterations (not three) and this one is from Zara.
A sequin blazer - a true can’t-live-without item.
A white jacket - my version is from Zara with a fantastic cut and a tight waist.
A black dress - mine is from Solace London and I want to copy it in every colour…
A great trouser suit - you can wear these as separates equally successfully as together.
A coord - the ultimate coord is the Serena Bute coord. It’s all about colour, comfort and confidence.
A statement top - for all occasions.
A classic, easy jumper - when you find one you love, buy two and treat them with care.
Jeans - as above, so with jeans.
The perfect black trouser - find a pair flattering for your shape.
A neutral bag - mine is in taupe.
A black bag - to go with everything.
A belt - one that’s going to change every dress you wear it with.
Nude knickers - mine are by Wacoal.
A bra - one that’s nude, totally nude and without lace as lace can sometimes peep through.
Scarf - for playful accessorising.
White trainers - my go-to pairs are Hogan or Russell and Bromley.
Silver brogues - where would I be without these?
Pair of comfortable heels - I’m so over wearing tottery, pin-thin heels...
Great black shoe that’s comfortable - who can argue with that?
