Today's guest in my bathroom once again, was Shabir Daya, the brilliant pharmacist and co-founder of https://www.victoriahealth.com. His co-founder Gill also came to visit us but stayed in the bathtub as she's camera-shy! Shabir recommends the best supplements and treatments on the market for treating the side-effects of menopause. Below I have listed all the products discussed in the video.

What is menopause?

Menopause is defined as having no menstrual cycle for at least a year. It can cause numerous changes to your body, one being irregular, heavier or lighter periods. Hormonal imbalance is the primary cause for this, specifically a decreased production of oestrogen and progesterone in the ovaries. Other symptoms that women experience is hot flashes, joint pain, mood swings, vaginal dryness and a low metabolism.

How is menopause treated?

Menopausal symptoms can be treated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the most effective treatment to date. As the name suggests, it replaces the hormone oestrogen that is lost during menopause. Other treatment options include bioidentical hormone replacement, oestrogen therapy and of course natural plant based remedies.

Causes of hot flushes:

The root cause of this symptom is not yet clear to Scientists, however what is known is that the part of the brain that senses and controls body temperature is the hypothalamus. During menopause oestrogen levels decline, affecting the glitch in the way the hypothalamus senses body temperature, making it think you are “too hot”. The brain sends messages to cool the body down, the heart senses the message to pump more blood to the skin, dilating blood vessels and this is where the sweat glands begin to work.

Mood swings during menopause are caused largely by a hormonal imbalance of oestrogen, which influences the production of serotonin, a mood regulating neurotransmitter.
