Julia Hunter’s body peels are rather famous so I’m very excited that I finally got to experience this treatment. It’s performed to reduce superficial yet pertinent crepey skin and pesky cellulite.
I’m quite lucky because my arms have always been good; the one area I do want to focus on is my legs, starting with my thighs. My knees tend to talk to one another as there’s excess skin and rippling on the side. But part of this cellulite is lymphatics, so I pinch and slap my skin every morning and I dry brush, and occasionally, use my mini trampoline which are all excellent for lymphatic drainage.
It is worth noting that cellulite appears most on your behind and the back of your thighs and unfortunately, ladies, as always, it has to do with genetics. People genetically lay fat down in different places.
Today we’re doing a high dose of retinoic tretinoin peel which forces new collagen production so it takes the chicken wire (the collagen structure) and tightens it all up. It pushes the skin at the top off and forces the production of new skin.
We start with body microneedling which is excellent and I do this regularly at home myself, but with a much smaller needle. This opens up the skin so the acid is absorbed faster. Then we use the acid which is very yellow in colour and makes the skin flake. We have to do small areas at a time (starting with just my thighs) because the chemical has to be managed by your liver. Ladies, it goes without saying this is not a peel you would do at home.
I have a very high pain threshold, but this treatment didn’t hurt too much; it stings like a graze. As Julia says, “if it doesn’t hurt, it doesn’t work”. It takes about a week to start peeling and then continues to peel for about two weeks. I’m ready for my skin cells to wake up and come out of retirement…
