Some days all I want to wear is a combination of navy and grey; faultlessly chic and fresh every time. But, there are some days where I want to play, and the joy it gives me putting a more elaborate and colourful outfit together is insurmountable… So this virtual Closet Confessions with the fabulous Lucy is all about print clashing.
Print clashing can be a car crash or it can be a phenomenal clash. I encourage everyone to have a go but this is really the realm of the experimenters and people who are prepared to take that next jump in terms of their styling.
It’s all about what suits you and what kind of woman or man you are. How far dare you go? But to save you from any print mishaps, I do have some fundamental tips. If I see the outfit way before I see the person (even if they’re wearing a great lip) it might be that the print is wearing you. Try different colours or wearing the outfit with more confidence, sometimes it can be as simple as that.
I used to wear a lot more prints and I collected antique-print dresses (which many of you know I used to layer over trousers, some dislike this look but I still approve). Nowadays, I’m a big fan of Joanne Hynes, an amazing designer I met in Dublin and I like to experiment with her artistic pieces.
I would say that colour families have a lot to do with it. It really helps if the two (or three, or four) pieces of clothing correspond and talk to each other in terms of their colours. I would suggest hanging clothes in outfits to be inspired by your prints and remember what you’ve put together so you can wake up one morning and within three minutes be wearing a really killer outfit.
When I wear prints, I do feel that I need to wear more makeup so I love to add a bold lip in Pookie or Swainy. That said, the most forgiving print is paisley because the colours flow together and are generally softer. Then it’s about layering it up. Take an echo of the colour and put it on top, add another, and another… I like to think of it as creating a masterpiece rather than writing a letter...
