I am a big believer in investment pieces and looking after them for years so that you can return to your wardrobe and welcome those pieces like old friends. In terms of my oldest pieces, I get rid of some, I sell some, I give some to friends and I keep some. There are some pieces I could never part with…

So this Closet Confessions is about vintage favourites and how you can have items in your wardrobe that have immeasurable amounts of longevity. I have had a coat from TSE Cashmere since 1997 and it’s totally timeless. If I ever wear something, before I put it back I check if there’s any mark on it, and if there is, I damp it with a sponge immediately. Another piece I adore is my Dries Van Noten blazer which cost a fortune for me at the time. It’s velvet and it’s ruched and it has a lot of sentimental value for me as it was part of my wedding going-away outfit.

Then there’s something of a family heirloom in my velvet coat with seahorses. A truly unique piece with absolutely stunning sleeves, I adore having it. But in order to wear it, I must consider, how can I wear it now to make it feel fresh? You carry that history of the item with you and I think that’s part of what clothing should be – that every piece has a story to tell.

Let’s consider, when is something too tight? Obviously some pieces will become too small after a time but as far as I’m concerned, if I can brush my teeth and drive in it, it isn’t too tight. The beauty of the item more often than not outweighs the tightness. It’s also worth remembering posture: good posture makes medium clothes look regal. I often slouch which is why the tightness of an item can actually be a good thing.

From my Marc Jacobs coat that dates back to 1993 to my ground zero of shimmer jacket which holds such precious memories, clothes can carry such emotion with them. If you’re thinking about bringing an old item to the now, consider cutting the sleeve length to make it more modern, or try creative layering and wearing the item over jeans.

Ladies, find some old friends in your wardrobe that make you think “I love that and it was so beautiful” and try dressing it right up then try dressing it right down. It’s all about having a play...
