Exfoliating acids are a concept comparatively new to the skincare stratosphere, prior to these, physical exfoliants were much more popular. But, by comparison, physical exfoliants can be too harsh on the skin and exfoliating acids can penetrate deeper.
Many of you have asked me about how I use them and how I piece them into my skincare routine. I think it’s very important to suggest using these before bed because they do extra work on your skin so you require extra protection. If you use them in the morning, you must use SPF 50 afterwards.
How they work is they break down the bond that holds your dead skin cells to the surface of your skin, and the type of acid you use depends on your type of skin. They can be broken down into three main groups, alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), beta hydroxy acids (BHA), and poly hydroxy acids (PHA).
AHA acids include glycolic, lactic, malic, tartaric, citric and mandelic, and are all water-soluble, making them great for dry-normal, sun-damaged skin. BHA acids include salicylic acid, and are oil-solubles making them great for problem skin, including rosacea. PHA acids have a limited ability to penetrate the surface of your epidermis, therefore making them more suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Starting with the lowest in price is Plantastic Micropeeling Super Drops (£50 or £9.36 for members) by Beautypie. This is a very clever company that works through a subscription basis that means it’s cheaper once you’ve subscribed. This product is great for combination/oily skin as it resurfaces skin cells with no tingling.
Next we have Natural & Organic AHA/BHA Resurfacing Exfoliator (£26) by Jane Scrivener. This product gives a real freshness to your skin as it contains lactic acid to dissolve the “glue” between your cells. It also contains malic acid for exfoliation, and apple cider vinegar and bilberry.
The high product is Liquid Gold (£33) by AlphaH Skin Clinic. The brand was founded by Michelle Doherty who has previously suffered from acne so you know she’s into products that really work. It’s also great for sun damage and pigmentation, but avoid applying too close to your eyes.
Then at the tip-top is joint Lotion P50 (£47) by Biologique Recherche and Lactic Acid Toner (£38) by super facialist Teresa Tarmey. I apply the latter in the morning before my moisturiser with a microneedling roller.
The tip to using these is to use them frequently to get that well-rounded, lit-from-within glow. Try one and you’ll soon find it’s indispensable...
