Good morning everyone. Today I am joined by Lyla as I want to talk about skincare, style and makeup for 15-25 year olds. Lyla is 15. She's at that age where things are going to start changing and I want her to know how to look after her skin, understand why she gets spots or better yet, know how to prevent them.
Prevention is better than cure and my key tips for clear skin are:
When we hit puberty we have a higher level of testosterone which for boys increases hair growth on the face and that little hair brings with it sebum. Sebum protects our skin from the outside environment, but too much sebum can cause acne. So you need to find a balance between keeping the skin clean but not using products that are so strong that they strip the skins natural acid mantle, leaving your skin open to infection, bacteria or causing dryness.
Things to avoid:
As well as your skincare routine, look after your skin from the inside out. Gluten intolerance, sugar and high glycemic carbohydrates have been linked to rosacea and acne. I recommend lowering your sugar intake, taking a probiotic for gut health and burdock root to improve liver function. Zinc will help with inflammation and Vitamin A will reduce sebum.
It's especially important for teenagers around exam time, when they release a high level of cortisol (the stress hormone). Too much cortisol can cause acne which is why around this time breakouts can be worse, so stress management is high on my list too.
I love that Lyla and her friends don't like to wear heavy based foundation. It's great that at her age she is into wearing BFF everyday and not caking on Double Wear. She's keeping her skin protected with SPF 30 which is such a good habit to get your teenagers into. Lyla has dark circles so she uses BFF Eye too. She's experimenting with brands other than Trinny London, maybe it's not that cool to wear your Mummy's makeup but she always loves it when I put it on for her...
