Busy

The arrival of summer brings with it the joy of enjoying lunch al fresco rather than al desko, lounging around in loose linen and of course, the ultimate non-negotiable: SPF.

Sunscreen is a must-have to shield skin from UV rays which can damage our skin, leading to burning and premature ageing. Unfortunately, finding a good one is not always easy, and so many of us have been let down by thick, white, paint-like textures in the past.

What’s the best suncream to use this summer: FAQ's

The best sunscreen is always the one you want to wear. Our new product development team at Trinny London worked overtime when creating See The Light, our SPF 50+ moisturiser, to perfect the formula. Resolving all of the niggles that can put people off sunscreen, it’s lightweight, rather than thick and claggy, non-greasy and doesn’t leave skin with a tell-tale white cast. This makes for a formula you want to apply generously for high factor sun protection. Developed in Korea with cutting-edge technology, our innovative filters offer the maximum protection levels from both UVA and UVB rays.

If you want to go even further, you can top See The Light with BFF SPF 30 Cream, our skincare-hybrid that combines a subtle glow with added sun protection. The SPF in your makeup is never a substitute for a targeted sunscreen product, but it all adds up when shielding your skin.

Chemical sunscreen filters, like the ones we use in See The Light, work by absorbing UV rays and converting their energy into small amounts of heat. The amount of heat is so tiny, so you won’t feel the conversion beyond the warmth of the sun on your skin. Mineral filters are slightly different, and can also reflect and scatter UV rays. The downside of mineral filters is that there are only two of them (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) and both create a white cast on the skin. Chemical filters are lighter, suitable for all skin tones and more advanced.

UVA rays are present 365 days a year, even when the sun isn’t shining. They can also penetrate through glass and cloud, and while they might not burn or make an immediate, perceptible difference to your skin, they are slowly damaging your skin cells and robbing your complexion of collagen. Think of it like sand running through an egg timer at a glacial pace. UVA rays are the reason why you might notice you have more lines on the side of your face that’s closest to the window in your office, or on one arm if you do a lot of driving. Wearing sunscreen every day will help to keep your skin healthy and stop that all-important collagen from trickling away faster than it should.

The SPF rating on your sunscreen only refers to the level of protection from UVB rays. These rays are short, sharp and strongest during the summer. UVA rays have a longer wavelength, are present all year round and can penetrate deeper into the skin, with the ability to pass through glass and cloud. To make sure you’re getting protection from UVB and UVB rays, look out for the words “broad-spectrum protection” and a PA rating. See The Light is rated PA++++, the highest grade available.

SPF shields your skin from accelerated ageing by preventing UV rays from damaging your skin cells. If you’re skipping sunscreen, your collagen levels will deplete at a faster rate, leading to a loss of firmness and more prominent fine lines and wrinkles. Slather it on every day, and you’ll hold on tight to that precious collagen for longer.
