Exfoliation could be the answer to your dry skin problems

Whether you have consistently dry or occasionally dehydrated skin, chances are a moisturiser is your first port of call. But what if we told you that an exfoliant could be your unlikely skincare saviour?

Why is exfoliation good for dry skin?

Exfoliation is the process of whisking away dead skin cells from the surface of your complexion, and can benefit all skin types. These skin cells were once needed by your skin, but have been replaced over time, rendering them redundant. Our skin does shed dead skin cells itself, but this process slows as we age, making exfoliation an extra helpful addition to your routine.

Exfoliation will improve not only the appearance of your skin by increasing luminosity and glow, but the texture too. Dry skin can often feel rough to the touch, with a frustrating tendency to flake as freely as a croissant. Exfoliation helps to dial down these side effects by helping send dead skin cells on their way.

There are knock-on benefits for the rest of your routine too. Exfoliation clears the path for the much-needed nourishing serums and moisturisers that follow, allowing them to penetrate the skin with ease. Picture it like having a big wardrobe clear out. With your unwanted items no longer taking up precious hanger space, the process of putting together outfits becomes much easier.

How often should you exfoliate dry skin?

There’s no hard-and-fast rule for how often you can exfoliate dry skin, as it will depend on your skin’s unique needs. But, if you’re looking for a rough guide, we would aim for a few times a week. A caveat to this is if you have very sensitive skin or skin that is intensely dry with a tendency to become red and sore with the slightest misstep. In which case, only exfoliate once a week, using the gentlest methods. You may find that your skin needs more exfoliation at certain points of the year, such as during the winter months, and less at others. Things like stress and hormones can impact how your skin looks and feels too.

The method by which you exfoliate matters too. If your skin is easily irritated, liquid exfoliants offer a respectful way to exfoliate. Unlike physical exfoliants which can encourage scrubbing at the skin, liquid ones can simply be applied by smoothing on with your fingertips. This means minimal manipulation, reducing the risk of triggering redness or inflammation in the skin.
